Tiananmen Square is, ironically, entered through the “Gate of Heavenly Peace”. It was originally the gate used to enter the Forbidden City – and only nobility could get the permission to do that. (Hmmmm they either had noble servants or SOME commoners were allowed in…maybe just not allowed out). Anyway, exiting from the gate you come to the huge Tiananmen Square. It claims to be the largest square in the world and can hold a million people!!! Fortunately, the day we visited it was MUCH less crowded than that.
