Hong Kong Disneyland

Fantasyland! Adventureland! Cinderella! Small World! Never in my wildest dreams (though they do say it’s the place where dreams come true) would I have thought that I would become a world-traveling connoisseur of Disneyland. I love Disney, I love the excitement and the nostalgia and the memories and now…I’ve added yet another Disney destination. Hong Kong Disneyland is the latest Asian version, complete with Asian food preferences and building adaptations. It is, however, a fantasy world… under construction. It only opened in 2005 – and there are many areas under development and space for the future.
The walk down Main Street is actually a walk down memory lane – the shops that line the street are models of the original and it isn’t hard to imagine a sunny California Day. Even the castle with its entry to Fantasyland is the same (though, darn, you can’t climb around in it). The entrance way was stunning with a large group of sculptures of the Mickey gang.
Even though they say the attendance is low, we had no lack of lines to stand in – very happily reading our books. The park is suffering from growing pains – there are not enough things to keep people coming back frequently but the construction crews are working on an ambitious 15 year project to develop the park. I will look forward to returning in 10 years or so.
